 has formally appointed Rand Water as the lead agency in combatting the invasive alien plant species threatening the Vaal River Barrage Reservoir (VRBR). This newly designated role comes with a concerted effort to curb the proliferation of two notorious species: <em>Pontederia crassipes</em> (water hyacinth) and <em>Pistia stratiotes</em> (water lettuce). These plants have gained notoriety for their aggressive growth, exacerbated by nutrient-rich water effluents and favorable summer conditions.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, the situation reached an alarming peak, with invasive plants covering an extensive 397 hectares out of a monitored 940 hectares. However, thanks to the significant engagement from local communities and collaborative efforts through the Centre for Biological Control (CBC), this coverage has been drastically reduced to less than 2 hectares by the end of spring. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together for a common cause!</p>
<p>Rand Water is taking an integrated approach to long-term management of these invasive species. Their strategy includes not just physical removal of these plants, but also the implementation of biocontrol measures, where the CBC will play an essential role. This approach combines cutting-edge science with local know-how, ensuring sustainable solutions are in place, which will be vital for ongoing environmental health.</p>
<p>Leading this initiative are CBC’s experts, Professor Julie Coetzee and Dr. Kelby English, who are supported by Professor Martin Hill. The project recently secured four permits from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) to rear biocontrol agents at the Rand Water Nursery and community sites. These biocontrol agents are not only vital for managing the invasive species but are also raised by the community, reflecting a true spirit of cooperation and environmental stewardship.</p>
<p>Among the key players in this biocontrol strategy are four agents: the water lettuce weevil (<em>Neohydronomus affinis</em>), the water hyacinth hopper (<em>Megamelus scutellaris</em>), and two species of water hyacinth weevils (<em>Neochetina bruchi</em> and <em>Neochetina eichhorniae</em>). These agents have been painstakingly tested to ensure their host specificity, meaning they exclusively target the invasive plants, thereby minimizing unintended ecological impacts.</p>
<p>The biocontrol approach is regarded as one of the most sustainable and efficient methods to manage invasive species, but it requires careful and continuous monitoring. The recent successes at the VRBR signal a hopeful direction for ecological balance, demonstrating the potential for communities and expert organizations to work together effectively.</p>
