“Minister Champions Biosafety as Essential for a Sustainable Future”

Malam Balarabe Lawal, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, has taken center stage at the 2024 International Biosafety Conference (Biotech24) held in Abuja, calling attention to the pivotal role of biosafety in fostering environmental sustainability. Hosted by the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), the conference this year is themed “Biosafety: An Indispensable Tool for Achieving Food Security, Health Improvement, and Environmental Sustainability.”

As global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and food insecurity loom larger than ever, Lawal emphasized that biosafety is not merely a technical concern but a foundational element of collective security. During his keynote speech, he remarked, “Biosafety impacts the health of our ecosystems, our food systems, and the well-being of our communities. It is vital to ensure that our environmental practices are sustainable and that our food sources are safe.”

Attendees witnessed an array of discussions centered on how biosafety practices can safeguard human health while ensuring that food systems are resilient and sustainable. Dr. Agnes Asagbra, the Director-General of NBMA, voiced her enthusiasm for the initiatives being put forth, stating, “As we embark on this important journey together, we are reminded of the vital role biosafety plays in safeguarding our human health and the environment.” She further noted that the commitment to biosafety has never been more critical in these challenging times.

The conference also celebrated outstanding contributions in the field with awards of excellence presented to five individuals who have significantly impacted biosafety practices in Nigeria. Among the honorees was Dr. Rufus Ebegba, the pioneer Director-General of NBMA, recognized for his leadership and dedication in establishing biosafety frameworks across the country.

The event serves as a crucial reminder of how interconnected our environmental health, food security, and public health concerns are. By prioritizing biosafety, Nigeria is taking concrete steps to ensure a sustainable future for all.

With these discussions highlighting the importance of biosafety, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and the knowledge that their contributions could lead to substantial benefits not just for Nigeria but for the entire global community.
