Engen and Proconics Partner to Enrich Educational Experience at Merebank Secondary School
In a heartwarming initiative aimed at uplifting South Africa’s youth, Engen has joined forces with Proconics to enhance the learning environment at Merebank Secondary School in the vibrant South Durban area. This collaborative project underscores the organizations’ commitment not only to education but also to the broader community development, providing a splendid example of corporate social responsibility in action.
Identified by the Community-Engen Joint Committee as a school that could benefit from additional resources, Merebank Secondary School received a significant boost with funding of R40,000 dedicated to robotics and coding equipment. The funds will allow students at the school to dive deep into the exciting world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
With these resources, the school is set to acquire an impressive array of tools designed to foster innovation and enhance practical learning. The procurement list includes 60 AAA batteries, 15 classroom Smart Home kits, 15 Smart Home material packs, 15 Ring Bit car v2 kits, 15 Microbit starter kits, and 10 crocodile clips. This investment shows a strong commitment to creating an engaging and conducive learning environment, encouraging learners to explore their curiosity and talents in technology.
Vimla Chetty, acting deputy principal of Merebank Secondary School, expressed deep gratitude for this generous support, pointing out the transformative impact these resources will have on the school’s robotics and coding programs for grades eight and nine. “It’s essential to teach our pupils the coding skills necessary to function in a digital and information-driven world,” she noted. The school has ambitious plans to expand this exciting program to additional grades by 2025, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to education.
Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI manager, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the crucial role education plays in shaping the future of the nation. “Engen is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of our youth through access to quality education,” he emphasized. This project aligns perfectly with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which advocates for inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
Proconics, a prominent South African engineering firm, is also immersed in community support initiatives, showcasing their dedication to social responsibility. Reginald Mbatha, managing director of Proconics, stated, “The partnership with Engen exemplifies our commitment to empowering future generations. Together, we are making a meaningful impact on the lives of the pupils at Merebank Secondary School.”
As the world continues to evolve into a more technology-driven era, initiatives like this are vital. They offer learners not just the tools, but also the inspiration to excel academically, thereby preparing them for future careers in STEM fields. The collaboration between Engen and Proconics serves as a powerful reminder of how corporate partnerships can lead to profound community impact.
