Noise Pollution Dialogues: VRA Takes Steps to Enhance Community Experience in Anwomaso
By Kamal Ahmed
In the heart of Kumasi’s Ashanti Region, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has initiated an important dialogue with local residents and stakeholders regarding noise pollution concerns linked to the Anwomaso Thermal Plant. The recent community meeting, held on November 10, aimed not only to address the reported disturbances but also to foster a spirit of cooperation and solution-seeking among residents.
The noise complaints had reached a significant volume, prompting the VRA to take proactive measures. During the gathering, VRA’s Manager of Community Relations, Mr. Samuel Fletcher, assured attendees that the Authority is committed to being a good neighbor. “We value our relationship with the community and recognize the importance of addressing their concerns,” he stated, emphasizing the VRA’s dedication to collaboration in overcoming challenges that affect local residents.
Responding to the community’s grievances, the VRA shared its innovative approach to mitigating noise through environmental initiatives. Central to this strategy is a tree-planting campaign designed to create a natural buffer against sound. This initiative highlights the dual benefits of afforestation—improving local air quality while also acting as an effective barrier against noise pollution.
Mr. Fletcher elaborated on the science behind this approach, noting how trees absorb sound waves through their leaves and branches, thereby lowering their intensity. “As we plant more trees, the cumulative effect of this natural sound reduction will be significant,” he added. This initiative not only promotes a greener environment but also enhances the urban landscape, making it visually appealing to the community.
Additionally, the VRA’s corporate social responsibility initiatives were showcased, including the Community Development Programme (CDP) Tertiary Scholarship Scheme, which aims to foster educational opportunities for local youth. Such initiatives illustrate the Authority’s ongoing commitment to give back to the communities that host its operations.
In appreciation of the VRA’s efforts, Nana Osei Boa III, the Chief of Anwomaso, expressed his gratitude and urged community members to continue their supportive relationship with the Authority. Feedback from local stakeholders, including Mr. Simon Ababio, emphasized the importance of speedier action in noise reduction practices.
The Anwomaso Thermal Plant’s role in the government’s efforts to provide stable electricity supplies in the Ashanti Region underscores its significance to local development. The VRA’s responsiveness to community feedback not only enhances public relations but also ensures that the area addresses its challenges collaboratively.
With initiatives aimed at beautifying the environment and reducing disruption, the VRA exemplifies the importance of community engagement in infrastructure development. Future collaborations could set a precedent for how similar organizations interact with local communities across Africa.
