Reach for Recovery Expands to Limpopo: A New Hope for Breast Cancer Patients
POLOKWANE – Kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a bang, the Reach for Recovery initiative has taken an empowering step forward by launching its first satellite branch in Limpopo! This new location, nestled within the Limpopo Care and Wellness Centre (Lim-CareWell), symbolizes a significant leap for an organization dedicated to providing both practical and emotional support to breast cancer patients and their families.
The initiative’s launch event took place on Saturday in collaboration with Theunis Fichardt Hospitium, bringing together a community eager to learn and engage. Attendees were treated to informative volunteer testimonies and an insightful tutorial on breast examinations. These educational sessions are vital, as early detection is one of the most effective ways to combat this disease.
Founded in 1953 by Terese Lasser, who herself is a breast cancer survivor from the U.S., Reach for Recovery emphasizes the necessity of peer support for those facing this challenging diagnosis. It made its South African debut fourteen years later, offering a beacon of hope as survivors extended their hands to newcomers navigating the uncertainty of treatment and recovery.
One of the organization’s standout efforts is the Ditto Project, which focuses on women from low-income backgrounds who have undergone mastectomies yet struggle to afford essential items like prostheses, specialized bras, or even reconstructive surgery. Supported primarily by the South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association (Samfa), this project distributes high-quality silicone prostheses for a minimal fee. To qualify, patients need to present a valid hospital registration card, ensuring that those in state care can also benefit.
Beyond just physical support, Reach for Recovery is committed to uplifting marginalized communities. This ensures that even women without medical aid can access the vital resources they need. Fittings for prostheses are conveniently conducted at regional offices and clinics across South Africa, making assistance accessible.
Volunteers are the heartbeat of this initiative, bringing encouragement and connection to patients in hospitals. They also prepare goody bags filled with essential items, reminding patients that they are not alone in their journey. New volunteers undergo specialized training to hone their skills in providing compassionate care.

With the addition of the Limpopo branch, Reach for Recovery is poised to make an even greater impact, giving breast cancer survivors the hope, dignity, and community support they truly deserve. This endeavor not only highlights the importance of awareness and collaboration but also sets a powerful example for other regions in Africa to follow.
Together, we can turn awareness into action and support those who need it most during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Stay tuned for more updates, and celebrate this vital initiative as it strengthens the bonds of community and compassion.
