“Exciting News: Duty Rebate Sparks Growth in Raw Material Supply for New City Construction!”

Zimbabwe’s Construction Sector Gets a Boost with New Rebates for Contractors

In a remarkable development for Zimbabwe’s construction industry, contractors are now set to benefit significantly from a new financial initiative announced by the Treasury. Under a recent decree, Statutory Instrument 170 of 2024, the government has introduced a rebate and partial refund scheme for specific imported raw materials. This move aims to stimulate a surge in construction activity as the nation gears up to build new cities and improve its infrastructure.

The announcement, made public this past Friday, allows approved building contractors to receive rebates or partial refunds on duties for capital goods and materials imported to support their projects. This measure aligns perfectly with the government’s ambitious development agenda focused on economic growth and urban expansion.

It’s important to note that motor vehicles, fuel, cement, consumables, and other materials readily available within Zimbabwe will not be eligible for these rebates, ensuring that the initiative is specifically tailored to elevate the local construction sector without undercutting domestic suppliers.

Treasury officials expect that this new scheme will encourage contractors to jump on board, facilitating the construction of a variety of projects nationwide. Notably, the initiative encompasses over eighty different products essential for constructing new cities, including vital infrastructure elements like roads, bridges, buildings, and solar energy installations. This holistic approach showcases the government’s commitment to developing a sustainable urban framework.

Moreover, in a bid to curb any potential misuse of the rebate system, the Treasury has tightened its oversight of the application process. This is a crucial step in ensuring that only legitimate contractors benefit from these measures, thereby maintaining the integrity of the program and fostering trust within the industry.

Underlining the significance of these initiatives, the government has emphasized that constructing new cities is not merely a housing endeavor but an economic driver aimed at achieving an ambitious annual growth rate of at least five percent. One of the flagship projects in this initiative is the new city being developed in Mount Hampden, where efforts are actively underway to finalize technical and financial modalities.

As Zimbabwe embarks on this transformative journey, the construction sector stands poised for growth, creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs and boosting employment across various skill levels.

Stay tuned for more updates on how this initiative unfolds and its impact on the nation’s economy!
