“Exciting New Partnership: AVIC and KHD Join Forces to Launch a Cutting-Edge Clay Calcination Plant in Burkina Faso!”

Breaking Ground on Sustainability in Burkina Faso's Cement Industry

In a major development for the construction industry, AVIC International Beijing, in collaboration with Humboldt Wedag GmbH (KHD), has secured an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract from Ciments de l’Afrique (CIMAF) to construct a state-of-the-art 900t/day clay calcination plant in Burkina Faso. This innovative project is a pivotal step in cement production, aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions while enhancing sustainability in Africa’s burgeoning construction sector.

The newly proposed plant is designed to work in harmony with CIMAF’s existing clinker grinding line, facilitating the production of calcined clay cement, which holds the potential to lower carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 30%. This remarkable achievement not only aligns with the global drive towards sustainability but also emphasizes Burkina Faso’s progressive stance on eco-friendly infrastructure development.

KHD, renowned for its cutting-edge solutions, will spearhead the design and equipment installation for the plant, featuring a sophisticated two-stage preheater and flash calciner integrated with a pre-combustor. This technology is designed with the future in mind, allowing for the installation of KHD’s advanced Pyrorotor technology, which will maximize the use of secondary fuels. Notably, the system also includes a color stabilization process, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality calcined clay—whether grey or black.

CIMAF Group Vice-President Malik Sefrioui expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, labeling it a significant part of their decarbonization roadmap. He mentioned that the project is fully financed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) through a green loan, reinforcing the importance of private sector involvement in sustainable development. Additionally, Sefrioui revealed that two more similar projects are in the pipeline, underscoring CIMAF’s commitment to leading the charge in eco-friendly cement production.

Scheduled for completion by mid-2026, this project highlights the potential for technological advancements in sustainable construction—not just in Burkina Faso but across Africa, setting a precedent for similar initiatives across the continent. As the world increasingly turns its eye towards green technologies, initiatives like these underscore the role of African nations in crafting a more sustainable future.
