Menzel Elektromotoren Delivers Advanced Pump Solutions for Angola's Water Supply
In a significant step toward enhancing water supply infrastructure, Menzel Elektromotoren, a renowned German manufacturer, recently unveiled two state-of-the-art pump drives installed with extended piping systems aimed at supplying water in Angola. This move reinforces Menzel’s reputation as a dependable partner in the field of drive solutions, which has been particularly crucial in regions where reliable water access is paramount.
The newly implemented pump systems draw water from the vital Kwanza River, transporting it over an impressive distance of 17 kilometers. This undertaking involves a vertical ascent of 135 meters to a water treatment facility located just outside of Luanda, Angola’s bustling capital. The complexity of this project underscores Menzel’s commitment to improving essential services in African nations, showcasing innovative engineering solutions adapted to local needs.
Previously, the operator faced challenges with existing pump systems that were integrated directly into the infrastructure, posing difficulties in terms of maintenance and replacement. Menzel has effectively addressed these challenges by offering complete pump systems that include not only the drives but also the necessary connection pipework. This proactive approach highlights Menzel’s ability to tailor solutions that align seamlessly with customer needs. Having previously provided replacement motors on short notice, the company has again demonstrated its commitment to customer service by supplying a more comprehensive, easy-to-implement solution.
The production of these advanced units was carried out at Pawils Elektromaschinenbau, Menzel’s subsidiary known for its exceptional craftsmanship and engineering expertise. The team meticulously selected pumps that met the performance specifications required, adjusting mechanical interfaces for optimal installation to ensure smooth operation. Each unit measures approximately 12 meters in length and boasts a robust flow rate of 900 m³/min. Powered by a nominal 500 kW motor operating at 6000 V and 1475 rpm, these pumps are engineered to meet the demanding needs of the community they serve.
This project started with the replacement of two out of three identical pump systems, while one remained functional to ensure uninterrupted water supply during the transition. Given the successful commissioning of the initial units, Menzel anticipates the order for the third system will soon follow.
As Menzel Elektromotoren continues to pave the way for improved infrastructure in Angola, it sets a positive example of how technology and engineering can tackle critical challenges in water supply and management.
