Celebrating Excellence: Local Chemists Honored as Esteemed Fellows of the Chemical Society!

In an inspiring stride for scientific excellence, three distinguished lecturers from Stellenbosch University’s Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science have been celebrated with the prestigious Fellowship of the South African Chemical Institute (SACI). This recognition underscores their substantial contributions to the field, showcasing their commitment to scientific research, education, and leadership within the chemistry community.

Professors Delia Haynes, Bert Klumperman, and Willem van Otterlo were inducted for their exemplary dedication to their discipline, marking a proud moment for the institution. Their work and passion not only reflect their personal achievements but also elevate the profile of chemistry education in South Africa.

Delving into their contributions, Prof. Haynes shines in the intricate field of crystal engineering, where her research focuses on multicomponent molecular crystals. By harnessing intermolecular interactions, she designs molecular materials that boast fascinating and practical physical properties. Notably, Haynes became the inaugural president of the African Crystallographic Association in 2021, a milestone that speaks volumes of her influence. Her accolades include the Jan Boeyens Award in 2015 and being a distinguished Fulbright Scholar in 2010, further affirming her stature in academic circles.

Meanwhile, Prof. Klumperman dedicated his expertise to the Advanced Macromolecular Architectures as holder of the South African Research Chair (SARChi) from 2006-2022, consistently achieving an A-rating from the National Research Foundation since 2007. His impressive list of accolades includes the SACI Gold Medal in 2013, the SASOL Innovator of the Year medal in 2015, and the NSTF Lifetime Award in 2016, showcasing his lasting impact on the field of chemistry.

Prof. van Otterlo, who spearheads the department, is renowned for his innovative methodologies aimed at synthesizing small, functional organic molecules, with a keen interest in developing new anti-cancer agents from natural products. His influence extends beyond his achievements, as he has also earned the SACI Raikes Medal and the esteemed Georg Foster Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The accomplishments of these professors are complemented by the success of their postgraduate students. Dr. Gestél Kuyler was recognized with the SACI Postgraduate Medal as the top PhD student, while Ms. Lisa de Wet received the James Moir medal for the best BSc Honours student in chemistry for 2023. Additionally, Mr. Reece Tuck won the same honor for his BSc Honours degree from Nelson Mandela University, further highlighting the department’s commitment to fostering young talent.

Prof. Burtram Fielding, Dean of the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University, expressed immense pride in these achievements, underscoring the invaluable contributions each individual has made to the faculty and the broader chemistry community.

As these esteemed scholars continue their pivotal work, they embody the spirit of innovation and leadership that is essential for advancing scientific knowledge in South Africa and beyond. Their journeys remind us of the importance of dedication and collaboration in the pursuit of excellence in the sciences.
