Papua New Guinea’s Bright Stars: Three Women Earn Chevening Scholarships for UK Masters

In a significant achievement for Papua New Guinea, three remarkable women have been awarded Chevening Scholarships to pursue their master’s degrees in the United Kingdom. Maisy Lus, Dr. Amanda Avinaga, and Veurageno Arava were chosen from a highly competitive pool of applicants, highlighting their dedication and potential to contribute to the development of their home country.

At a recent farewell reception held in Port Moresby, British High Commissioner Anne Macro expressed her excitement about the scholars, stating, “A Chevening Scholarship truly is a life-changing experience.” The prestigious program, established in 1983, aims to cultivate global leaders, and these three women are set to join a network of over 57,000 alumni who have gone on to excel in various fields, including politics, medicine, and business.

The cornerstone of the scholarship is its flexibility, allowing scholars to select any master’s program that aligns with their aspirations at a university in the UK. The financial support covers tuition fees and living expenses, enabling students to focus primarily on their studies and personal growth. High Commissioner Macro encouraged the recipients to take full advantage of their time in the UK, stating, “A master’s degree requires focus and dedication to your studies, but also take advantage of everything else the UK has to offer.”

Each of the women’s chosen programs reflects a commitment to addressing critical issues both in Papua New Guinea and globally. Maisy Lus will embark on a Master of Science in Applied Marine Science at the University of Plymouth, which aligns perfectly with the global emphasis on sustainable marine resources. Dr. Amanda Avinaga will study a Master of Science in Critical Care at Queen Mary University of London, equipping her with skills to enhance healthcare delivery in PNG. Meanwhile, Veurageno Arava will delve into Cybersecurity and Forensics at Westminster University, a field increasingly vital in today’s digital age.

The Chevening Scholarship not only empowers these women but also symbolizes hope for future generations in Papua New Guinea. With an established framework for international scholarship programs like Chevening and the Commonwealth Scholarship, aspiring scholars in PNG have an opportunity to make meaningful contributions to their communities upon their return.

Applications for the prestigious Chevening Scholarship are now open and will close on November 5, encouraging more talented individuals to jump at this opportunity to enrich their academic and professional journeys.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of these exceptional women, we look forward to the impactful changes they will bring back home. Here’s to the next chapter in their inspiring journey!
