Türkiye Strengthens Natural Gas Ties with Azerbaijan and Algeria
In a significant move to enhance its energy security, Türkiye has recently renewed agreements on piped gas and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) with Azerbaijan and Algeria, boosting its credentials as a key player in the global energy market. According to the latest updates from Bayraktar, Türkiye’s trade in natural gas has expanded to encompass 34 countries. This strategic expansion aligns with Türkiye’s ambition to establish itself as a central hub for natural gas distribution in the region.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, BOTAS, the state-owned natural gas distribution company, continues to dominate Türkiye’s energy landscape with an impressive turnover of .5 billion in 2023. This achievement underscores the robust demand for natural gas amidst global energy trends and Türkiye’s proactive investments in natural gas infrastructure over the past few years.
Bayraktar highlighted Türkiye’s impressive capacity to manage between 70 and 80 billion cubic meters (BCM) of natural gas annually. This feat is made possible through a comprehensive network that includes seven transnational gas pipelines, five LNG facilities—three of which are floating storage and regasification units (FSRU)—and two underground natural gas storage facilities.
In May, BOTAS solidified its international partnerships by signing a groundbreaking 10-year LNG agreement with ExxonMobil. This deal guarantees the supply of up to 2.5 million tons of LNG per year from the United States, showcasing Türkiye’s commitment to diversifying its energy sources and reinforcing its role on the global stage.
Currently, Türkiye relies heavily on imported gas to meet its energy needs, having imported around 14.3 BCM, which accounted for 28.3% of its total consumption of 50.5 BCM last year, primarily through LNG. This demonstrates the country’s strategic approach not just to ensure energy availability but also to stabilize energy prices, making it an attractive destination for investors and energy companies alike.
Overall, Türkiye is making significant strides in solidifying its position as a regional energy hub, collaborating with key partners like Azerbaijan and Algeria, and continuing to innovate in energy infrastructure. As these developments unfold, the future looks bright for Türkiye’s energy landscape.
