Abuja Kicks Off Transport Fare Drop Initiative as Nigeria Embraces Compressed Natural Gas
In a significant move towards a more sustainable and affordable transportation system, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) has launched a Transport Fare Drop Programme, beginning in the bustling capital of Abuja. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, helping to address both environmental concerns and rising transportation costs for citizens.
As part of this initiative, representatives from PCNGi recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). This agreement specifically pertains to the route connecting Abuja to Itakpe Station, Ajaokuta Train Station, and Adavi. The exciting aspect of this partnership is that by converting their fleet vehicles to CNG, transport operators can enjoy a significant fare reduction, which is expected to range from 30% to 40%. This could mean considerable savings for daily commuters, making transportation more accessible and less burdensome on the wallet.
Michael Oluwagbemi, the Programme Director of PCNGi, emphasized the importance of this initiative during a briefing on Saturday. He highlighted that the conversion to CNG not only benefits the environment but also boosts the financial viability of transport businesses. “We are committed to encouraging our members in Abuja and beyond to make this switch, which comes with tangible benefits,” Oluwagbemi stated.
The PCNGi isn’t stopping with Abuja, however. Plans are afoot to expand the CNG conversion programme to cover 38 centers across several states, including Kaduna, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, and Edo. Such a nationwide approach will not only encourage more transport operators to adopt cleaner technologies but also significantly improve air quality in various communities.
This initiative is a promising step forward for Nigeria as it seeks to modernize its transportation system while being mindful of environmental impacts.
