Currently serving as the Head of Dermatology and a Full Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, Professor Dlova made history by becoming the first African Dean of the School of Clinical Medicine. Her passion for dermatology is evident in her extensive research, which focuses on the unique dermatological needs of diverse skin types. With over 135 scientific publications under her belt and recognition as a “B” rated National Research Foundation (NRF) researcher, her work is truly groundbreaking.
Professor Dlova’s international influence is notable; she is a proud member of the American Dermatology Association and has received prestigious accolades including the Gold Medal Scientific Merit Award from the South African Medical Research Council. Her presentations have reached audiences in over 70 countries, including esteemed Ivy League institutions.
Her vision is steeped in a sense of social responsibility. Recognizing a shortage of dermatologists in South Africa, Dlova has taken it upon herself to train aspiring experts in the field. “As the first black dermatologist in KwaZulu-Natal, I felt a strong obligation to cultivate a new generation of dermatologists,” she shared. Her dedication has resulted in the training of more than 40 African dermatologists, emphasizing the importance of localized research that addresses the unique skin and health challenges faced by the African population.

Born in Mtyolo, Eastern Cape, her upbringing was rich with warmth and encouragement, fostering a strong belief in the transformative power of education. As a proud mother to a son pursuing a Master’s in Medicine at Oxford through a Rhodes Scholarship, she embodies the essence of academic excellence.
