  • The quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is on the horizon
  • Nigeria’s Super Eagles square off against the Palancas Negras of Angola
  • A Nigerian defender has aired his thoughts ahead of the crunch knockout tie

The Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny is ready to rumble as the Super Eagles of Nigeria face off against the Palancas Negras of Angola in the opening fixture of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinals.

Anticipation for this showdown is reaching a fever pitch, with players and fans eagerly awaiting the clash between these formidable teams.

The excitement is fuelled by the scant encounters between the nations in recent years and the lingering memory of the Angolans securing a one-nil victory in their last competitive meeting back in 2005.

Super Eagles defender on Angola clash

In a recent interview with Brila.net, defender Kenneth Omeruo emphasised the significance of clinching victory in the upcoming match.

“While we haven’t faced Angola in quite some time, I recall a friendly match in 2012 that ended in a draw. Previous encounters between our teams have always been closely contested,” Omeruo shared.

“However, there’s no room for a draw this Friday; a winner must emerge. Much talk has circulated, but our collective focus is on delivering results on the pitch. The Naija spirit must prevail.”

The Kasimpasa star, who has so far been pivotal to the Eagles’ immense run at the AFCON, will be looking to lead Nigeria to what could potentially be their first competitive victory over the Angolans since 1989.

However, it is worth acknowledging that a victory over Pedro Goncalves’ side won’t be a walk in the park. In recent years, the Central African team has gained a reputation for defeating opponents ranked higher than them.

Why Nigeria must not underrate Angola

In a prior report, the Sports Brief highlighted several reasons why Nigeria’s Super Eagles should not underestimate the Angolans as they approach the crucial quarterfinal match.

The Super Eagles face a tricky team in the Palancas Negras, who have made a name for themselves by defeating bigger opponents.

Jose Peseiro’s team are determined to achieve their first competitive victory against Angola in more than 35 years.
