West Wits Mining Strengthens Position in South Africa's Gold Sector with Strategic Buyback

In an exciting move for the mining industry, West Wits Mining Limited has successfully completed a significant buyback of a 10% minority interest in its South African subsidiary, West Wits Mining SA (Pty) Ltd. This acquisition has raised West Wits’ ownership in the lucrative Witwatersrand Basin Project from 66.6% to an impressive 74%.

The buyback transaction, valued at approximately US.09 million, involved Lilitha Resources (Pty) Ltd, the previous holder of the 10% interest in West Wits Mining SA. With this strategic maneuver, West Wits is not only consolidating its control over the project but is also positioning itself for greater operational efficiency and enhanced decision-making capabilities.

It’s noteworthy that Lilitha Resources will continue to maintain a stake in the broader project, holding a 26% interest via West Wits MLI (Pty) Ltd. This arrangement ensures that Lilitha Resources retains a strategic role moving forward, contributing to future developments as the Witwatersrand Basin Project progresses.

West Wits described the buyback as a crucial step for unlocking greater value from the project. The company’s July 2025 Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) update reflects optimistic economic projections, indicating promising long-term gold production. The Qala Shallows project, which serves as Stage 1 of the Witwatersrand Basin Project, boasts a remarkable post-tax Net Present Value (NPV7.5) of US0 million, with an astounding Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 81%.

Over its anticipated 16.8-year mine life, the upgraded DFS forecasts total gold production of 944,000 ounces, underlining the operational scale and longevity of this prominent project. What’s even more encouraging for potential investors is the projected All-In Sustaining Cost (AISC) at US,289 per ounce—positioning the operation competitively within the global gold production landscape.

Investors are showing increased interest in South African gold assets, and West Wits is perfectly poised to capitalize on this growing trend. As the mining industry continues to evolve, West Wits Mining Limited’s strategic moves highlight the potential for significant gains—underscoring the vibrancy of the South African mining sector. For those curious about the future of mining in Africa, this is certainly a development worth keeping an eye on!
