Inspiring Journey of Johachim Kotze: From Adversity to Achievement
Meet Johachim Kotze, a shining example of resilience and determination. At just 29 years old, Johachim is making meaningful contributions as a boiler operator at Gobabis District Hospital, proudly working under Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services. His journey, however, hasn’t been without its hurdles.
Johachim’s roots trace back to the Epako location of Gobabis, where he grew up as part of the Nama and San (Ju/’hoansi) communities—both known for their rich cultural heritage yet facing historical challenges. With many families in his area grappling with poverty and unemployment, Johachim’s path was not an easy one. After completing Grade 12 at Epako High School in 2015, he faced the tough realities of life after school. “Both of my parents are unemployed, and there was no stable income, so I had to hustle, selling anything I could just to survive,” he shared in an interview with Africazine.
Despite these challenges, Johachim envisioned a brighter future. He started making cupboards on a small scale, dreaming of a day when he could receive formal training to enhance his skills. That opportunity arrived in 2021 when Palms for Life, an empowering youth organization, awarded him a scholarship, allowing him to enroll in a Joinery and Cabinet Making course at the Community Skills Development Foundation (COSDEF) campus in Gobabis. With hard work and dedication, he completed his training in 2024, sharing, “I’m very grateful to Palms for Life. They funded my tuition and accommodation. Without their support, I wouldn’t have had this chance.”
Using his newly acquired skills, he launched a small furniture business that quickly gained recognition for its quality craftsmanship. His entrepreneurial journey took another significant turn in October 2024 when he received mentorship from Uakii Wilderness Safaris, broadening his business acumen and equipping him with valuable insights into running a successful operation.
By April 2025, Johachim secured a pivotal role as a boiler operator at the Gobabis District Hospital, where he now ensures the smooth operation of steam and hot water systems critical for hospital functions. Remarkably, he is one of 1,200 young individuals supported by Palms for Life, who aim to provide vocational training and opportunities to those from marginalised communities across Namibia.
Reflecting on his journey, Johachim says, “I come from a mixed heritage and a background of struggle, but that didn’t stop me. I now have a career, a business, and—most importantly—hope.” His story isn’t just one of personal triumph; it’s a beacon of inspiration for many young Namibians facing similar circumstances.
In a world filled with challenges, Johachim Kotze exemplifies how determination and support can pave the way for success, making him a true role model for aspiring youth in Namibia and beyond.
