Class of ’80 Comes Together to Celebrate Their Legacy and Ignite Inspiration for Future Generations!

Oosrand Alumni Reunite to Celebrate Legacy and Future

On March 21, a heartwarming reunion took place at the Rietvlei Zoo Farm, bringing together former students from the Oosrand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation, Class of 1980. The nostalgic event was much more than just a gathering; it served as a tribute to the late Mr. Philander, a cherished principal who significantly impacted the school and the lives of its students.

The day kicked off bright and early at 07:00, encouraging attendees to shake off the cobwebs with a choice of a scenic 5km or 10km walk. After the early physical activity, participants enjoyed a delightful ‘bring-and-braai’ where laughter and shared memories flowed freely, filling the atmosphere with camaraderie and joy.

A School that Shaped Future Leaders

Former student Archie shared his heartfelt reflections about Oosrand’s unique legacy. At its inception, the school stood out as the only high school on the East Rand designed specifically for the Coloured community, welcoming students from neighborhoods like Alra Park, Geluksdal, Reiger Park, Eden Park, and Dikhatole (Germiston). Archie highlighted that despite the challenges faced during its early years, Oosrand fostered a nurturing environment that enabled students to excel and become influential figures across various fields.

Among its esteemed alumni are notable names such as Andrew le Roux, one of South Africa’s pioneering foreign diplomats of colour; Dr. Boris Wilkinson, a groundbreaking dentist; Dr. Anthony ‘Tony’ Andrews, who was the first coloured doctor to establish a practice in Goedehoop Street; and Judge Colleen Collis, who reached high court status. Other successful former students include journalists, educators, and business leaders, underscoring the institution’s pivotal role in shaping their futures.

Looking Forward: Reconnecting and Giving Back

The reunion wasn’t solely a time to reminisce; it also sparked discussions about the future. Jackoli Van Staade, another proud alumnus, expressed a desire to strengthen connections among former students and initiate collaborative efforts to give back to the school that laid the foundation for their successes.

As the event wrapped up, attendees embraced the spirit of unity and ambition, promising to maintain their ties and support the new generation of learners at Oosrand. It was clear that the bonds formed within those school walls extend far beyond a mere education—they are relationships that inspire and empower.

This celebration of legacy at Oosrand highlights the importance of community, education, and giving back, ensuring that future generations will continue to reap the benefits of a foundation built on resilience and excellence.
