Zimbabwe Launches Digital Skills Ambassadors Program: A Step Toward a Tech-Savvy Future
In a landmark move to boost digital literacy across Zimbabwe, the government has officially launched the Digital Skills Ambassadors Program, an innovative collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and tech giant Huawei. This exciting initiative was unveiled today in Harare, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa leading the charge to equip the country’s youth with essential coding skills. The ambitious goal? To train an impressive 1.5 million coders over the next three years.
Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, is spearheading the program, which aims to provide comprehensive training in a range of critical skills, including programming, data science, and Android development. Mavetera emphasized that these skills will be taught through several dynamic channels, including Huawei’s cutting-edge DigiTruck mobile classrooms, virtual sessions on the UDACITY platform, and enhanced Community Information Centres (CICs), which will soon transform into modern digital centers.
Recognizing the critical need for digital education, especially in rural areas, the program will deploy dedicated digital ambassadors. These ambassadors will work diligently to engage with communities at the village level, ensuring that residents can access vital training resources. This grassroots approach is designed to break down the barriers that many face in obtaining digital skills, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and digitally literate society.
Mavetera also expressed gratitude to the various stakeholders supporting this initiative, affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to broadening digital access throughout Zimbabwe. “We believe that empowering our youth through technology will not only benefit individuals but will also drive economic growth and innovation throughout the nation,” he stated.
As Zimbabwe takes these progressive steps towards a tech-savvy future, the Digital Skills Ambassadors Program is not just an investment in technology; it is an investment in the country’s future. By equipping millions with the skills needed for the digital age, Zimbabwe is set on a path to unlock new opportunities and drive sustainable development across all sectors.
