Egypt Strengthens Ties with Sudan Through New Transportation Initiatives
Cairo, Egypt – In an inspiring move to enhance regional cooperation, Egypt has unveiled ambitious plans to develop its transportation and trade networks with Sudan. The spotlight was on this new initiative during the inaugural Egyptian-Sudanese Business Forum held in Cairo on November 24, 2024. The gathering emphasized the importance of fostering economic ties and removing barriers to cross-border trade.
Addressing attendees, Egypt’s Minister of Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, highlighted the strategic significance of bolstering transportation infrastructure between the two neighboring nations. He pointed out that Egypt and Sudan are linked by three main overland routes: the Toshka to Arqin route, which is situated 100 kilometers west of the Nile, the Qastal to Wadi Halfa corridor, only 35 kilometers east of the Nile, and the scenic Red Sea Coast route from Halayeb to Port Sudan, covering 280 kilometers.
One of the key projects he announced includes the construction of a new interchange railway station at Abu Simbel. This exciting project is set to connect Egypt’s inaugural electric railway line with a newly planned route extending from Abu Simbel to Wadi Halfa, thereby enhancing travel and trade between these vital regions.
Additionally, Egypt is already home to three dry ports located along the Sudanese border—Qastal, Arqin, and Ras Hadarib. Future development plans aim to create logistics zones at Qastal and Arqin, significantly easing trade operations between the two nations. In a further bid to improve logistics, the navigational route from Aswan to Wadi Halfa is also to be enhanced, crossing the picturesque Nasser Lake to encourage bilateral trade.
Al-Wazir also expressed optimism regarding Sudan’s immense potential as a hub for agricultural and logistical investments, given its rich natural resources and strategic position along the Red Sea. This initiative is not just a blueprint for infrastructure; it stands as a testament to the growing collaborative spirit between Egypt and Sudan, paving the way for a prosperous future.
As both countries work towards tighter economic integration, this effort reflects a broader mission to improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and harness regional potential for mutual benefit.
