When Croatian photographer and travel journalist Jurica Galić landed in South Sudan, he was keen to immerse himself in the vibrant culture of the Mundari people. Known for their unique customs—including setting fire to dried cow dung at sunset to ward off pesky mosquitoes—Galić soon discovered there was much more to the community than meets the eye.

His journey led him to explore the profound connection between the Mundari and their prized Ankole cattle, a breed celebrated for its impressive horns and rooted in the landscapes of East and Central Africa. “My aim was to illustrate the harmonious relationship between man and nature,” Galić reflects. Armed with a vision and a creative spark, he found a captivating way to frame his photographs. Positioning his camera through the horns of one of the majestic cattle, he transformed them into a natural frame that draws the viewer deeper into the scene. The enchanting backdrop was further enhanced by the ethereal smoke swirling in the air mixed with the captivating hues of the setting sun.

Despite initially bringing his professional camera, the practical realities of fieldwork soon shifted his focus, leading him to capture stunning shots on his smartphone. Galić found that the vibrant yellow sky mirrored what he saw with his naked eye, requiring minimal editing. “The final image captures the moment beautifully, and I couldn’t be happier,” he enthuses.

This striking photograph has not only received accolades but has become a source of personal pride for Galić. He is eager to return to South Sudan, where he plans to reconnect with the man featured in his award-winning shot. Galić intends to donate part of his prize winnings to him and share his remarkable story, ensuring that the connection forged through storytelling lasts well beyond borders.

This glimpse into the life of the Mundari tribe reflects the beauty of cultural exchange and the power of photography to bridge divides. Jurica Galić’s experience serves as an inspiring reminder that our world is filled with stories waiting to be told, particularly in the rich landscapes of Africa, which pulse with history and life.
