Lagos Waterways Get Much-Needed Cleanup for Safer Travel this Festive Season
As the festive season approaches, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is taking important steps to enhance transportation safety on Lagos’s bustling waterways. The agency has kicked off a project aimed at removing invasive water hyacinths from key waterways, which is crucial in ensuring smooth navigation for boat users and enhancing the overall safety of water travel.
Sarat Braimah, NIWA’s Lagos Area Manager, shared insights about the project, highlighting that the initiative will prioritize major channels known for high boat traffic. The first phase is underway at Omu Creeks, which has already been cleared, while intensive work is set to begin on the Ikorodu Water Channels. This thorough cleansing process is expected to last at least a week and will involve the meticulous removal of both waste and invasive plant species that can create hazardous conditions for boaters.
In the words of Braimah, “This initiative aligns with NIWA’s core mandate to ensure smooth and safe navigation for boat operators and other stakeholders.” With the holiday season leading to an expected influx of boat traffic, the timing couldn’t be better.
