Pretoria Set to Restore Power by Late Afternoon, Promises City Officials

The City of Tshwane acknowledges the extended power interruption caused by a failure in the high voltage gas-insulated switchgear at the Scientia Primary Substation.

The outage impacted various neighborhoods, including Lynnwood, The Willows, Villieria, Koedoespoort, Waltloo 1, Pyramid, and Pumulani, leaving many residents in the dark and raising concerns about their daily activities.

For those unfamiliar, gas-insulated switchgear is a crucial component that ensures the safe operation of electrical circuits, and its failure can lead to extensive outages, as demonstrated here. The technical team on-site is actively working on repairing compressors to restore service. Mashigo added that they are exploring alternative methods to reroute power from the Pyramid line to some of the affected areas in hopes of bringing back electricity sooner than initially projected.

“Electricity supply to the impacted areas is expected to be back online by this afternoon around 18:00, barring any further complications,” Mashigo noted, reassuring residents that the metro is committed to resolving the issue promptly.

As the situation unfolds, the City of Tshwane is expressing its gratitude to residents for their patience and understanding during this challenging time. They are dedicated to ensuring the reliability of services and will continue to provide regular updates as more information becomes available.

“The City of Tshwane appreciates your patience and understanding as we work to restore power,” said Mashigo. “We are committed to maintaining the reliability of our services and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

In related news, residents are also being advised to prepare for unseasonably cold weather fronts approaching Pretoria, which could add to the existing challenges amidst the power restoration efforts.
