Thando Volontiya’s GQ Creamery is on the brink of major retail expansion after attracting the attention of Shoprite Checkers.

The ice cream maker from Gqeberha is set to pitch for a R1m prize in the Standard Bank Kasi SME National Pitch Challenge. Volontiya, who has already won the Eastern Cape leg of the competition, aims to establish a factory to scale production and meet growing demand.

GQ Creamery Gains Retail Attention

Thando Volontiya’s GQ Creamery has generated significant buzz on social media, leading to an offer from Shoprite Checkers to stock his ice cream. This opportunity comes as Volontiya prepares to pitch for a substantial prize that could accelerate his business plans. The ice cream will initially be available in Nelson Mandela Bay, with future expansion planned across the Eastern Cape.

Volontiya’s journey began with making desserts in a back room, and he has since evolved his business model to include a mobile ice cream trailer. His goal is to open four outlets by early 2027, funded by profits from his existing store in Newton Park and the upcoming location in Walmer.

Plans for Expansion and Growth

Volontiya’s strategy includes establishing a factory for larger-scale production, which he believes is essential for meeting the anticipated demand. He has already enrolled in a training course at Carpigiani Gelato University to enhance his skills in ice cream production. This education will support his ambition to supply other small businesses with his products once he has the necessary equipment.
