Africazine:

Fiji faces a significant public health challenge as nearly 80% of five-year-old children suffer from tooth decay.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is intensifying efforts to promote oral hygiene. Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa highlighted that about half of children aged 12 and 15 have cavities, and nearly 90% of teenagers with tooth decay have not sought treatment.

High Rates of Tooth Decay Among Children in Fiji

Tooth decay is a pressing issue for many children in Fiji, affecting their health and education. Ravunawa noted that untreated dental problems can lead to pain, hinder children’s ability to eat, and impact their concentration in class. This situation underscores the need for better oral health practices among the youth.

The Ministry is advocating for simple daily habits, such as brushing teeth for at least two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. This initiative aims to instill good oral hygiene practices from a young age.

Government and Corporate Efforts to Combat Dental Issues

The Ministry of Health is expanding preventive dental services through school-based screenings and fluoride treatments. Partnerships with organizations like Colgate-Palmolive (Fiji) Pte Limited are crucial in providing resources such as toothbrushes and toothpaste to support oral health programs in schools.

Colgate-Palmolive’s general manager expressed enthusiasm about the participation of over 800 students in the “2 for 2” toothbrushing campaign. This initiative aims to educate children on the importance of maintaining good oral health.

Next Steps for Oral Health Initiatives

  • Expand National Toothbrushing Day to more schools and communities.
  • Continue partnerships with corporate sponsors for resources.
  • Enhance preventive dental services in remote areas.

Fiji is committed to improving children’s oral health through education and community involvement.
