South African athletes showcased their dominance at the Comrades Marathon, achieving remarkable records. George Kusche and Gerda Steyn both made history in the prestigious race.

On June 14, 2026, George Kusche won the men’s “up run” in a record time of 5:15:56, breaking an 18-year-old record. Gerda Steyn also triumphed, securing her fifth title and breaking her own record for the third time.

George Kusche Breaks Long-Standing Comrades Record

George Kusche’s victory in the 99th Comrades Marathon marked a significant milestone. He finished the race in 5:15:56, surpassing the previous record of 5:24:49 set by Leonid Shvetsov in 2008. Kusche’s tactical approach allowed him to take the lead in the final 10 kilometers, showcasing his endurance and strategy.

The race featured a competitive field, with the top five finishers all completing the course under the previous record. Kusche’s win is particularly impressive given that this was only his second Comrades Marathon, following a 12th place finish the previous year.

Gerda Steyn’s Historic Fifth Title

Gerda Steyn’s achievement in the women’s race is equally noteworthy. She completed the 85.777km route, breaking her own record by five minutes. This victory marks her fifth overall win and fourth consecutive title, making her one of the most celebrated athletes in Comrades history.

Steyn faced strong competition from Zimbabwe’s Nobukhosi Tshuma, who finished second, but ultimately pulled ahead in the latter stages of the race. Her performance not only highlights her skill but also the growing competitiveness in women’s road running.
