Namibia is set to strengthen media ties with Russia through a new collaboration.

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and Russia’s RT channel are in talks to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing cooperation in training, content sharing, and co-production. This announcement came during a meeting in Windhoek, where both parties expressed optimism about the partnership.

Namibia and Russia Explore Media Collaboration

The discussions between NBC and RT Africa highlight a commitment to fostering a robust media relationship. NBC Director General Stanley Similo emphasized the historical ties between Namibia and Russia, noting that many Namibian leaders have connections to Russia. This shared history could serve as a foundation for storytelling and content creation.

Similo also mentioned that NBC is considering providing RT with a slot on the NBC Plus platform in the coming weeks. This move could enhance the visibility of RT’s content in Namibia, further solidifying the partnership.

Training Opportunities for Namibian Media

RT Africa’s Head, Svyatoslav Shchegolev, pointed out the potential for training programs tailored for Namibian media professionals. These programs would be offered through RT’s global online platform, focusing on editorial, production, and technical skills. Shchegolev proposed the idea of an online workshop dedicated to Namibia, addressing local media issues and enhancing content production capabilities.

This initiative aims to equip Namibian journalists with the necessary skills to produce high-quality content, thereby strengthening the media landscape in the country.

Next Steps in the NBC-RT Partnership

  • Signing of the memorandum of understanding within the next few months.
  • Potential slot for RT on the NBC Plus platform in the coming weeks.
