Major Coal Mining License Granted in Eswatini: A Boost for Energy Production

In an exciting development for Eswatini’s energy landscape, His Majesty King Mswati III has officially granted a coal mining license to the Eswatini Electricity Feedstock Company (EEFC). This significant milestone paves the way for the Lubhuku coal project, which is anticipated to generate an impressive 1,500 megawatts of electricity. This project not only represents a crucial step toward energy independence for Eswatini but also positions the country as a potential leader in regional electricity production.

The newly issued license has a renewable lease period of 20 years, enabling EEFC— a subsidiary of the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC)—to commence full-scale coal extraction at the Lubhuku site. The project boasts a diverse shareholding structure, with His Majesty King Mswati III owning 25%, EEC holding 50%, and the Government of Eswatini retaining 25%. This collaborative framework demonstrates a commitment to national interests while fostering investments that could spur local economic growth.

EEC Board Chairman highlighted the long-awaited approval and expressed deep gratitude to the King, emphasizing that this project signifies a new era of possibilities for Eswatini. “This licence means let’s go and work,” he announced, enthusiastic about the employment opportunities this initiative will create for Emaswati citizens. Local job creation is especially crucial as it not only boosts the economy but also empowers the community by providing sustainable livelihoods.

Adding to the excitement surrounding this development, Prince Lonkhokhela, the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, referred to the license as “very special.” He underscored the importance of this project in attracting new investments, enhancing energy security, and stimulating economic expansion. This initiative marks Eswatini’s commitment to achieving electricity self-sufficiency, a goal that has become increasingly vital in a world grappling with energy challenges.

With the Lubhuku coal project on the horizon, Eswatini is poised not only to meet its domestic energy needs but also to contribute significantly to the regional energy market. This ambitious initiative reflects the nation’s forward-thinking approach and sets a precedent for future investments in the country’s energy sector.

As Eswatini embarks on this transformative journey, the positive implications for the economy, job market, and energy independence are becoming clearer, with many anticipating further advancements and successes in the nation’s quest for sustainable growth.
