Indonesia Takes the Spotlight: New Member of IOC Executive Council and UNESCO POST Committee!

Exciting news is coming from Uzbekistan! The Indonesian delegation was at the heart of significant developments at the 43rd United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) General Assembly held in Samarkand from October 30 to November 13. With a focus on advancing education, cultural understanding, and scientific advancements, Indonesia has emerged as a key player on this international stage.

The highlights of this gathering showcase Indonesia’s commitment to enriching global dialogue. One major achievement is the adoption of the Indonesian language as one of UNESCO’s official languages, paving the way for greater cultural exchange and understanding. This recognition is not just a win for Indonesia but also a step toward promoting linguistic diversity worldwide.

Additionally, Indonesia’s election to the Management of Social Transformations (MOST) committee marks another milestone. This committee aims to enhance the role of social sciences in shaping public policies, effectively linking academic insights with government decision-makers. Indonesian Ambassador to France, Mohamad Oemar, emphasized that this membership underscores Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage while demonstrating its dedication to evidence-based policymaking.

In the domain of marine science, Indonesia was celebrated with a seat on the Executive Board of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Committee (IOC). This emphasizes the nation’s vital role as a maritime country, strengthening its position in global discussions on marine governance and knowledge-sharing.

Moreover, the assembly acknowledged the upcoming 400th anniversary of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Mawassari’s birth in 2027, whose contributions as a scholar and a unifier between Indonesia and South Africa will be honored. His legacy as a spiritual leader and anti-colonial figure continues to inspire generations.

On a culturally significant note, UNESCO also adopted a resolution recognizing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as major celebrations. This means during these significant holidays, UNESCO won’t hold official meetings, allowing for observance and celebration within the global community.

These five achievements—recognition of the Indonesian language, representation on the MOST committee, the celebration of Sheikh Yusuf, and the acknowledgment of Eid—highlight Indonesia’s growing stature and contributions in education, science, and cultural understanding within the UNESCO framework. They signify that Indonesian diplomacy is proactive, shaping narratives and aligning national priorities with global goals.

As the world looks on, Indonesia’s impactful presence at UNESCO illustrates a robust commitment to cultural diplomacy and global collaboration, proving that it is not merely participating but is actively influencing the conversation on the world stage. Here’s to Indonesia! 🌏
