The São Tomé CCS pilot is set to operate for three years, starting in 2028. It will involve capturing CO2 emissions and injecting them into a deep saline reservoir located at Barra do Furado, Quissamã. This strategic experiment will not only validate procedures for carbon capture but also pave the way for future commercial CCS initiatives, whether they are onshore or offshore.
Renata Baruzzi, director of engineering technology and innovation, explained how this project serves as a vital research and development initiative. “The São Tomé CCS Pilot Project is designed to test and validate the fundamental technologies and methodologies for deploying large-scale carbon capture and storage hubs in Brazil,” she said, showcasing the potential for real-world applications in the future.
