Imo State faces a critical need for enhanced child nutrition investments.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called on the Imo State Government to prioritize child nutrition funding. This appeal was made during a stakeholders meeting focused on resource mobilization and Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) for improved maternal and child nutrition in Owerri.
UNICEF Advocates for Increased Child Nutrition Funding
UNICEF’s Chief of Enugu Field Office, Juliet Chiluwe, emphasized the importance of government ownership in the shift towards MMS. She urged the state to create policies and allocate funds to support this initiative. Chiluwe highlighted that every naira invested in nutrition contributes to healthier children, underscoring the long-term benefits of such investments.
The call for action included a commitment to a child nutrition fund aimed at scaling up MMS for pregnant women. This initiative is crucial for the effective implementation of maternal and child health programs in the state.
Government’s Commitment to Health Investments
Imo’s Commissioner for Health, Chioma Egu, assured stakeholders of the ministry’s dedication to providing policy direction and coordination for MMS. Egu reiterated that health should be viewed as an investment rather than an expenditure, indicating a shift in the government’s approach to health funding.
Nutrition Officer Etienne Obidah pointed out that the state has seen stagnation in maternal and child health. He called for comprehensive actions that would have tangible impacts on communities, not just be reflected in statistics.
Next Steps for Imo State’s Nutrition Initiatives
- Government to pledge commitment to child nutrition funding.
- Implementation of MMS programs for all pregnant women.
- Follow-up actions by stakeholders to ensure accountability.
Investing in child nutrition today is essential for a healthier future in Imo State.
