Africazine:

The Suez Canal is witnessing a remarkable resurgence in container ship transits, signaling a recovery in international shipping routes.

In the third quarter of 2026, transits by medium and large container vessels surged from 16 to 166, according to the Suez Canal Authority. This increase reflects a significant recovery, with net tonnage rising from 2.4 million to 29 million tonnes, marking an approximate 1,108% growth.

Surge in Suez Canal Container Transits

The Suez Canal has recorded a more than tenfold increase in transits during the third quarter of 2026. This growth is largely attributed to the French shipping group CMA CGM, which is expanding its operations through the canal. The authority reported that 166 container vessels crossed the waterway between July and September, compared to just 16 during the same period in 2025.

The discussions between SCA Chairman Osama Rabie and CMA CGM executives focused on enhancing the French carrier’s use of the canal. The recovery comes after significant disruptions in Red Sea shipping due to attacks on commercial vessels, which had forced major operators to reroute around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope.

Key Figures on Suez Canal Transits

  • 166 container vessels transited the Suez Canal in Q3 2026
  • 2.4 million tonnes net tonnage in Q3 2025
  • 29 million tonnes net tonnage in Q3 2026
  • 199 vessels belonging to CMA CGM transited the canal in 2026
  • 25.2 million tonnes combined net tonnage for CMA CGM in 2026
  • 60 CMA CGM vessels used the canal in September 2026
  • 221,000 tonnes net tonnage for CMA CGM Pantheon

Economic Significance of Container Shipping Recovery

The return of high-capacity vessels is crucial for Egypt’s economy. Canal tolls serve as a significant source of foreign currency, and increased shipping activity supports various sectors, including port operations and logistics. Rabie emphasized the canal’s capacity to accommodate the global container fleet, aiming to enhance its maritime services to maintain competitiveness.

CMA CGM’s commitment to restoring services through the Suez Canal indicates a strategic direction for the company, although the pace of broader service restoration will depend on maritime security and operational conditions.

Future Prospects for Suez Canal Operations

  • Continued expansion of CMA CGM’s operations through the canal
  • Monitoring of maritime security conditions
  • Potential for increased international shipping services

The Suez Canal’s resurgence in container transits highlights its vital role in global trade.
