Academics from Mangosuthu University of Technology showcased their commitment to community health at a recent symposium.
During the World Environmental Health Day Commemoration held from 29 to 30 September 2026, the university received research accolades for its contributions. The event, themed “Environmental Health: Standing with Science to Protect Communities,” gathered experts to discuss how environmental health research can enhance community resilience.
MUT’s Impact on Environmental Health Research
The symposium took place at Durban’s Capital Zimbali, co-hosted by the National Department of Health, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, and the iLembe District Municipality. It brought together academics, policymakers, and practitioners to explore the role of rigorous research in fostering healthier communities.
Dr Thobile Poswa, Head of the Department of Environmental Health, led the MUT delegation, which included Dr Mpou Manyatsa, Dr Siphesihle Masimula, and Dr Mathews Lecheko. Their presentations emphasized the importance of aligning research with local and national public health priorities.
Key Research Initiatives Presented
Dr Lecheko presented a participatory initiative focused on Silimela Primary School in KwaMashu, Durban. His study aimed to empower young learners and local residents to take active roles in enhancing environmental health practices and awareness. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to community engagement in health improvement.
