Education in Liberia is set for a significant transformation through a new partnership.
LICOSESS College of Education and Change Agent Network/Opportunity Network Liberia have signed a 15-year agreement aimed at enhancing teacher training and expanding access to quality education. The partnership, initiated on August 3, 2026, will manage three campuses serving approximately 1,690 students in Montserrado, Bong, and Nimba counties.
New Partnership to Enhance Teacher Training
The collaboration between LICOSESS and CAN/ONL is designed to connect professional teacher education with practical classroom experience. This initiative addresses the shortage of qualified teachers, particularly in rural areas where access to trained educators is limited. Transition meetings held on July 30 and 31 involved school administrators, teachers, and support staff to discuss the new management structure and implementation plans.
LICOSESS aims to prepare teachers who can effectively serve their communities post-training. This commitment aligns with CAN/ONL’s mission to expand educational opportunities for underserved children. The partnership is expected to strengthen the link between teacher preparation and classroom needs.
Learner-Centric Facilities and Resources
The three campuses collectively feature 65 classrooms, 20 administrative offices, and over 40 modern bathrooms with running water. Additional resources include science materials, multimedia teaching tools, and vocational education equipment. The facilities are equipped with two standby generators and campus-wide water systems, ensuring a conducive learning environment.
As part of the agreement, the CAN Leadership Academy will serve as an official LICOSESS Demonstration School. This designation allows trainee teachers to gain supervised classroom experience, observe seasoned educators, and receive professional feedback, enhancing their readiness for the teaching profession.
Next Steps for Implementation
- Relocation of the LICOSESS Patmelia Annex to the Jacob Town campus starting September–November 2026.
- Recruitment for the 2026–2027 academic year.
- Launch of a free vacation and enrichment school program.
- Conducting engineering and classroom-readiness assessments.
- Infrastructure renovations and intensive teacher training.
The partnership aims to improve educational outcomes and teacher preparedness across Liberia.
