Zambia is advancing its renewable energy goals with a significant new solar project.
The country has added a 500 MW solar project to its pipeline, which is nearly 60% of its current installed solar capacity. ZESCO has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for a total of 1 GW of new solar capacity, aiming for 3,000 MW by 2030.
Zambia’s Solar Capacity Expansion Plans
The new 500 MW solar project, developed by Hungarian group EnerSynk, is part of Zambia’s broader strategy to enhance its renewable energy infrastructure. This project is located in the Copperbelt and is expected to significantly contribute to the country’s energy supply.
In addition to EnerSynk’s project, ZESCO recently signed another PPA for a 500 MW solar plant with South Korea’s KS Eco Solutions Holdings. Together, these projects represent a substantial increase in Zambia’s solar capacity, which has grown from 88 MW in 2021 to 841 MW in 2026.
