The inauguration of three solar power plants in the Union of the Comoros marks a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in the region.
Financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development at approximately AED84.4 million, these plants have a total installed capacity of approximately 20 MW. They aim to generate around 33.75 GWh of clean electricity annually, benefiting approximately 17,500 households and reducing carbon emissions by about 20,900 tonnes each year.
UAE’s Commitment to Renewable Energy in Comoros
The solar power plants were inaugurated by Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of the Comoros, alongside UAE officials. This project showcases the UAE’s dedication to supporting sustainable development through renewable energy initiatives. The collaboration aims to enhance energy security and infrastructure in the Comoros.
The three plants are strategically located across Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Moheli. They include battery energy storage systems and medium-voltage transmission lines, which are essential for improving the reliability of electricity supply in the region.
Impact on Comoros’ Energy Sector
This initiative comes at a critical time for the Union of the Comoros, which has been heavily reliant on imported diesel for its energy needs. In 2024, diesel accounted for 91% of the country’s energy mix, highlighting the urgent need for diversification.
The expected output from the solar plants will cover approximately 13.3% of total electricity demand, significantly contributing to the country’s energy generation capabilities. This project not only aims to reduce reliance on imported fuels but also to enhance the overall efficiency of the energy system.
