Ayakha Godlwana, a chef from Durban, is being recognized for his bravery after rescuing a woman from a burning building.
Godlwana, 32, saved 74-year-old Doddy Teranes from the Delphi Greek Taverna fire. He will receive a hero’s award from the KwaZulu-Natal International Business Association for his courageous act.
Durban Chef Saves Life in Fire
Ayakha Godlwana rushed to the Delphi Greek Taverna when he learned that Doddy Teranes was trapped inside. Despite the thick smoke and danger, he made multiple attempts to reach her. On his third or fourth try, he used a hosepipe to navigate through the smoke and successfully brought Teranes to safety.
Both Godlwana and Teranes emerged unharmed from the incident. Godlwana returned to his job at a nearby coffee shop shortly after the rescue, continuing to serve customers while receiving widespread recognition for his actions.
Community Response to Heroism
The story of Godlwana’s bravery has inspired many in the community. Zane Groenewald initiated a fundraising campaign called “A Hero called Ayakha” to support him. Groenewald expressed that Godlwana’s actions exemplified the best of humanity, stepping forward in a moment of crisis without hesitation.
Omie Singh, the president of the KwaZulu-Natal International Business Association, will present the award to Godlwana at the Palm Terrace Coffee Shop on Lilian Ngoyi Road in Durban.
