Malawi is investing in its youth by providing essential vocational training to empower them economically.
The Malawi Relief Fund-UK and the Issa Foundation have successfully trained 69 youths from Blantyre over three years. The program, which cost K1.6 billion, focused on skills such as electrical installation, carpentry, plumbing, and bricklaying.
Empowering Youth Through Vocational Training
The initiative took place at Maone Technical Vocational School in Blantyre, where participants received comprehensive training. This program not only provided technical skills but also included free learning materials, practical resources, and daily meals to ensure that the youths could concentrate fully on their education.
Graduates of the program leave with certificates and starter toolkits, enabling them to embark on self-employment immediately. The Malawi Relief Fund-UK emphasizes that every young person deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of their background.
Key Investment in Youth Skills Development
Malawi Relief Fund-UK’s chief executive officer, Muhammad Mangera, highlighted the importance of this investment in the future of the youths. He noted that misconceptions about technical skills often contribute to poverty, and this program aims to change that narrative.
Graduates like Ishmael Mickdad expressed gratitude for the skills and tools provided, which they believe will help them contribute positively to the nation.
Next Steps for Graduates
- Graduates can start self-employment immediately using their toolkits.
- Continued support from the Malawi Relief Fund-UK for skill development.
Investing in vocational training is a powerful step towards economic empowerment for Malawi’s youth.
