Egypt’s Water Minister Discusses 2026 UN Water Conference Preparations

Egypt is taking a proactive role in shaping global water governance ahead of the 2026 UN Water Conference.

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam engaged in discussions with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed about preparations for the upcoming conference. They emphasized the importance of cooperation to achieve practical outcomes that enhance global water action.

Egypt’s Commitment to Global Water Governance

During the meeting at the UN headquarters, Sewilam praised the UN’s efforts in organizing the 2026 conference. He highlighted the need for continued collaboration to ensure that water issues remain a priority on the international agenda.

As co-chair of the “Water for the Planet” dialogue, Sewilam reviewed consultations with various stakeholders, focusing on developing innovative initiatives that yield tangible results. He stressed the importance of maintaining momentum on global water commitments.

Key Focus Areas for the 2026 Conference

The discussions included expanding renewable energy-powered desalination and improving water reuse and wastewater treatment. These strategies are vital for addressing the increasing global water scarcity.

Both Sewilam and Mohammed underscored the necessity of encouraging innovation in water technologies and establishing clear financing mechanisms for proposed initiatives. This approach aims to ensure that programs and projects are viable and impactful.

Next Steps for Water Initiatives

  • Develop pioneering initiatives for tangible results.
  • Ensure coherence between the 2023, 2026, and 2028 UN Water Conferences.
  • Encourage innovation and lower costs in water technologies.
