Egypt Upgrades National Grid with 1.5 GWh Battery Storage Projects

Egypt is advancing its renewable energy strategy with a significant battery storage upgrade.

The national grid will see a 1.5 GWh battery storage enhancement, facilitated by Amea Power’s contracts with China Energy Engineering Corporation, Gotion, and Al Nowais Group. This initiative includes the construction of the 1 GWh Nefertiti plant in Benban and the 500 MWh Horus plant in Zafarana, along with a new factory aimed at producing up to 3 GWh of battery systems annually.

Egypt’s Ambitious Battery Storage Projects

The agreements signed by Amea Power mark a pivotal step in Egypt’s renewable energy landscape. The Nefertiti and Horus plants will play crucial roles in stabilizing the grid by integrating renewable energy sources. The new factory’s production capacity is expected to significantly contribute to local energy storage solutions.

Details regarding the factory’s location and ownership structure remain undisclosed, but the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance local manufacturing capabilities. This move is essential for reducing reliance on imports and fostering domestic industry.

Egypt: Key figures on battery storage

  • 1.5 GWh battery storage upgrade
  • 1 GWh Nefertiti plant
  • 500 MWh Horus plant
  • 3 GWh annual production capacity
  • USD 223.5 mn debt package under consideration
  • 14.3 GWh storage capacity target by 2028
  • Nearly 1 GW planned to come online this year
  • 10 GWh factory by China’s Sungrow
  • USD 200 mn, 5 GWh facility by Kemet

Context of Egypt’s Renewable Energy Goals

This battery storage upgrade is crucial for Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions. By pairing solar and wind farms with storage solutions, the country aims to mitigate the intermittent nature of clean energy. This strategy is vital for preserving natural gas reserves during peak demand periods.

The government is actively pursuing local production agreements to enhance the supply chain and reduce import costs. The introduction of alternative battery technologies, such as sodium-ion components, further diversifies Egypt’s energy storage capabilities.

Next Steps for Egypt’s Energy Sector

  • Finalize financing arrangements for the battery plants
  • Begin construction of the Nefertiti and Horus plants
  • Launch the new battery manufacturing facility
  • Achieve nearly 1 GW of storage capacity by the end of the year

Egypt is taking bold steps to enhance its renewable energy infrastructure through local battery production.
