Cameroon’s banana exports are thriving despite challenging weather conditions.

In the first five months of 2026, banana exports reached 106,447 tons, marking a 19.9% increase from 85,359 tons during the same period in 2025. This growth was largely driven by the performance of major producers, particularly Compagnie Fruitière and its subsidiaries.

Strong Growth in Banana Exports

According to the Cameroon Banana Association (Assobacam), the increase in exports is notable given the dry season’s challenges. French group Compagnie Fruitière led the charge, with its largest subsidiary, Plantations du Haut Penja (PHP), exporting 76,093 tons, up from 61,227 tons a year earlier. This growth of 14,866 tons translates to an impressive 19.5% increase.

Another significant contributor, Compagnie des Bananes de Mondoni (CDBM), reported a remarkable growth rate of 39.9%, exporting 12,326 tons compared to 7,409 tons in 2025. These figures highlight the resilience and adaptability of Cameroon’s banana producers.

Impact of Weather on Production

Despite the dry season typically leading to lower production levels, exports from the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) also rose, albeit at a slower pace. CDC exported 18,028 tons of bananas, an increase of 1,305 tons or 7.2% compared to the previous year. The ability to maintain export levels during this challenging period suggests effective irrigation systems are in place to mitigate weather impacts.

Next Steps for Producers

  • Monitor the effectiveness of irrigation systems.
  • Assess production levels as the dry season progresses.
  • Continue to explore new markets for banana exports.
