University of the Free State Launches New Learning Management System UFS Learn

The University of the Free State is transforming its digital learning landscape with the launch of UFS Learn.

On 12 May 2026, the University unveiled UFS Learn, a new learning management system designed to enhance student and lecturer experiences. Built on the D2L Brightspace platform, it will replace Blackboard and aims to foster innovative and accessible teaching methods.

UFS Learn: A New Era in Digital Learning

The launch event, hosted by the Centre for Teaching and Learning, marked a significant milestone in the University’s digital transformation journey. UFS Learn is positioned as a critical enabler of the institution’s strategic priorities, focusing on producing equitable, future-ready graduates. Prof Anthea Rhoda emphasized that the platform represents a shared vision for teaching and learning at the University.

UFS Learn supports digitally enhanced, engaged, personalized learning, also known as deep learning. The system will provide students and lecturers with more responsive and inclusive learning experiences, enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities, and innovative content delivery methods.

UFS Learn: Key figures on digital transformation

  • More than 40 modules across all faculties will go live on the platform.
  • The full institutional rollout is planned for 2027.

Pilot Phase and Future Plans

The launch initiated the pilot phase, with selected modules set to go live at the start of the second semester. Feedback from lecturers involved in the pilot will inform the broader rollout. Continuous training and support will be provided to ensure a smooth transition.

Staff members are encouraged to engage with learning designers and explore the platform’s features to maximize its potential.

Celebrating Collaboration in Naming

  • The naming process for UFS Learn involved over 600 entries from staff and students.
  • The winning slogan, ‘Learn today and lead tomorrow,’ was officially recognized at the launch event.

UFS Learn is set to redefine the learning experience at the University of the Free State.
