Residents in Gauteng are urged to simplify their disability grant applications by utilizing local clinics instead of hospitals.

The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, announced that this initiative aims to enhance accessibility and affordability for residents applying for disability grants through the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). The department highlighted that some applicants still visit hospitals, where they may incur fees for medical verification forms, while these services are free at clinics and Community Health Centres (CHCs).

Gauteng’s New Approach to Disability Grant Applications

Faith Mazibuko emphasized the importance of making the application process easier for residents. By directing applicants to clinics and CHCs, the government aims to alleviate financial burdens associated with hospital visits. These local facilities are strategically located within communities, making them more accessible for residents seeking assistance with SASSA-related forms.

The Gauteng Department of Health and Wellness noted that under the Uniform Patient Fee Schedule (UPFS), fees may apply for administrative services at hospitals. In contrast, clinics and CHCs provide these services at no cost, encouraging residents to take advantage of this option.

Documents Required for Medical Verification

Applicants are advised to bring all necessary documents when visiting clinics or CHCs. Essential items include relevant SASSA documents, a valid identity document, and any available medical records. These documents will help healthcare practitioners complete the medical verification forms accurately.

Next Steps for Disability Grant Applicants

  • Visit local clinics or Community Health Centres for medical verification.
  • Bring all required documents to streamline the application process.
  • Reserve hospital visits for specialized care only.

Utilizing local clinics can significantly ease the disability grant application process for Gauteng residents.
