The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is set to launch upgraded Big 5 ZiG banknotes on April 7, 2026, as part of its currency stabilization efforts.

This announcement was made by RBZ Governor John Mushayavanhu, who emphasized the importance of public education ahead of the rollout. The new banknotes will be introduced in phases, starting with lower denominations, and will coexist with the existing currency.

Zimbabwe’s Currency Stabilization Efforts Progress

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) is advancing its currency stabilization strategy with the introduction of the upgraded Big 5 ZiG banknotes. This initiative follows Statutory Instrument 37 of 2026 and is designed to enhance the public’s confidence in the currency. A nationwide education campaign was conducted from March 1 to March 31, 2026, to inform citizens about the new banknotes and their usage.

The RBZ has assured the public that logistical preparations are in place for a smooth transition. The new notes will be available through various channels, including banking halls and ATMs, ensuring accessibility for all citizens.

Details on the New Banknotes and Their Denominations

The upgraded Big 5 ZiG banknotes will initially include denominations of ZiG 10, ZiG 20, and a new ZiG 50 note, effective April 7, 2026. Higher denominations, such as ZiG 100 and ZiG 200, will be introduced gradually based on demand. The existing ZiG banknotes will continue to circulate alongside the new series, phasing out only as they are deposited into the banking system.

This phased approach aims to meet anticipated cash demand while maintaining stability in the financial system. The RBZ has also set withdrawal limits, allowing individuals to withdraw up to ZiG 10,000 per week and corporate entities up to ZiG 100,000.

Upcoming Steps for the Rollout of New Banknotes
