Africazine:

Johannesburg is taking a bold step towards sustainability with its new Electric Vehicle Charging Complex.

The City of Johannesburg, through City Power, recently launched the first phase of this complex in Booysens, costing R14 million. This initiative aims to transition City Power’s 680-vehicle fleet to electric, promising significant fuel cost reductions and enhanced operational efficiency.

The Electric Vehicle Charging Complex is part of a broader strategy to modernize municipal services. By adopting electric vehicles, City Power aims to stay competitive and efficient in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. This transition is not just about environmental benefits; it also has a strong financial incentive.

Mayor Dada Morero highlighted the compelling financial case for this transition. Under a leasing model, City Power could save up to R29.7 million annually. If the vehicles are purchased outright and amortized over five years, the savings could reach R49.3 million each year.
