Hanoi Faces School Capacity Challenges Amid Rapid Population Growth

Africazine:

Hanoi faces a pressing need for educational infrastructure as its student population surges.

The capital currently has 2,954 preschools and general education schools serving 2.3 million students. Each year, Hanoi adds roughly 50,000 to 60,000 students, necessitating the construction of 30 to 40 new schools to accommodate this growth.

Hanoi’s Education System Strained by Rapid Growth

The city’s education system is under pressure due to a significant annual increase in student enrollment. With a population projected to reach 15 to 16 million by 2045, the demand for schools is expected to rise sharply. Planners estimate that Hanoi will need 986 additional schools by 2045, with preschools making up the largest share at 441.

To address this challenge, the city has identified 33 wards as priority areas for school construction. These wards are experiencing rapid urbanization, leading to a mismatch between population growth and available educational facilities.

Plans for New Schools and Infrastructure

Hanoi’s Comprehensive Master Plan aims to reshape the city’s infrastructure and public services through 2045. The plan includes setting aside 5% of public-service land in each ward for new schools and repurposing undeveloped plots. Additionally, businesses and developers will be encouraged to establish private schools to help meet demand.

For existing schools, the city seeks to modify national standards to allow for vertical expansion, enabling schools in dense urban areas to add floors and basements. This approach aims to reduce class sizes and alleviate competition for limited public high school seats.

Next Steps for Educational Development

  • The school plan is expected to be submitted for approval by March 30.
  • Final drawings for the plan will be completed by April 15.

Hanoi is taking decisive steps to address its educational infrastructure challenges amid rapid population growth.
