From Night School to PhD: Ngwira’s Journey
Dr. Cecilia Ngwira’s educational path began in Chileka, Blantyre, where she attended primary school. Her journey took her through various schools, culminating in her secondary education at Enukweni Community Day Secondary School. Despite limited options for higher education, she persevered, re-sitting her Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) exams in 2006 and scoring 18 points.
Ngwira’s determination led her to enroll in the newly introduced Bachelor of Science in Tourism program at Mzuzu University, where she graduated with a first-class degree. Shortly after, she joined the university as a staff associate, marking the beginning of her academic career.
Ngwira’s Academic Achievements and Impact
Supported by Mzuzu University, Ngwira pursued further studies with scholarships from the Chinese Government and the World Bank. She obtained her Master’s degree in Hebei in 2013 and later a PhD from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2017. Today, she serves as a senior lecturer and deputy dean in the Faculty of Tourism, Hospitality and Management.
In addition to her academic roles, Ngwira is a regional editor for the International Journal of Tourism Research and a board member of the Malawi Tourism Council. Her achievements serve as an inspiration for young women in Malawi, emphasizing that gender should not limit aspirations.
