The University of Energy and Natural Resources is making strides in supporting education in Sunyani.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) has begun distributing 15,000 exercise books to selected basic and Junior High schools in Sunyani East and Sunyani West municipalities. So far, 5,000 exercise books have been delivered to three schools: UENR Basic School, Odomase Presbyterian Junior High School, and Mmerɛ Dane Basic School.
UENR SRC Launches Education Initiative
The SRC’s initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on pupils and parents by providing essential learning materials. SRC President Abdulai Agyei Zakaria emphasized that education is a shared responsibility, highlighting the importance of giving back to the community. The distribution of exercise books is part of the SRC’s core mandate to support basic education.
Madam Mavis Affowaa, Headmistress of Odomase Presbyterian Junior High School, expressed her gratitude for the timely donation. She noted that the exercise books will significantly aid pupils who lack notebooks, thereby enhancing their participation and learning outcomes.
Challenges in Local Schools
While the donation is welcomed, concerns about safety have been raised. Mr. Gilbert Asomah, Head Teacher of Mmerɛ Dane Basic School, highlighted the need for a fence around the school to prevent students from wandering onto nearby roads. He urged the Education Directorate and Municipal Assembly to address this issue, as unauthorized access during class hours poses risks to both students and the learning environment.
Next Steps for the SRC Initiative
- The SRC will continue distributing the remaining 10,000 exercise books.
- Further outreach to other schools in the municipalities is planned.
- Engagement with NGOs and individuals for additional support is encouraged.
The SRC's initiative is a significant step towards enhancing educational resources in Sunyani.
