The Papua New Guinea Nurses Association demands urgent action from the government regarding overdue payments exceeding K30 million for nurses’ awards.

PNG Nurses Association Calls for Payment of Awards

The Papua New Guinea Nurses Association is pressing the government to fulfill its obligations to nurses. The overdue payments, which total more than K30 million, include both historical and upcoming awards. The association emphasizes that these awards have not been properly implemented since 2011, affecting multiple years.

In August, a congress meeting addressed these issues, focusing on housing for nurses and the need to resolve backdated liabilities. The association is determined to ensure these payments are prioritized in the first quarter of this year.

Several provinces, including the National Capital District and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, are reported to have outstanding liabilities. The association has taken steps to address these issues, including notifying the Personnel Management and Health Department about the need for timely payments.

Additionally, the association has established a savings and loan entity for its members, allowing them to access loans up to K50,000 while awaiting the overdue payments. This initiative aims to provide financial support during this challenging period.

Next Steps for the PNG Nurses Association

  • Hold general elections this month.
  • Ensure all liabilities are addressed in the first quarter of this year.
  • Expand the savings and loan service to other health workers after establishing a solid foundation.

The PNG Nurses Association is resolute in securing overdue payments for nurses, emphasizing the need for government accountability.
