Burundi has officially taken the helm of the African Union for 2026.

During the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye accepted the chairmanship from Angola’s President João Lourenço. This leadership transition will shape the AU’s political agenda and initiatives throughout the year.

Burundi Takes Over African Union Leadership

The handover ceremony marked a significant moment for Burundi as it assumes the role of Chair of the African Union. This position entails guiding the political work of the Union and overseeing the implementation of decisions made by the Assembly. Burundi will also represent the AU at various high-level regional and international engagements throughout 2026.

The leadership change aligns with the African Union’s theme for 2026, which focuses on ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems. This theme will direct the Union’s policies and activities as it works towards achieving the goals outlined in Agenda 2063.

Burundi’s Role in Shaping AU Policies

As the new Chair, Burundi will play a crucial role in setting the continental priorities for the year. The Assembly of Heads of State and Government, which is the AU’s highest decision-making body, will rely on Burundi’s leadership to adopt binding decisions that affect member states.

This transition is an opportunity for Burundi to influence key issues on the African continent, particularly those related to water and sanitation. The focus on these critical areas reflects the AU’s commitment to addressing pressing challenges faced by its member states.
