The Panyatsime Cultural and Heritage Centre is championing the importance of culture in Zimbabwe’s modern landscape.

On January 28, Panyatsime hosted a media tour for 20 journalists to promote understanding of indigenous knowledge systems. This event was part of the Global Community Engagement Day, which aims to strengthen relationships among various stakeholders in the community.

Panyatsime Celebrates Cultural Heritage with Media Tour

The media tour at Panyatsime included a guided walk through an indigenous trees garden, showcasing plant species used for food, medicine, and spiritual practices. Participants also explored traditional huts and the dare, a communal space historically used for dialogue and learning.

The event emphasized the philosophy that culture must be experienced to be fully understood, culminating in a sharing of traditional cuisine prepared by the hosts. This immersive experience aimed to deepen journalists’ appreciation of cultural heritage issues.

Challenges Facing Cultural Institutions in Zimbabwe

Mrs. Rumbidzai Dihwa, director of Panyatsime, highlighted the challenges cultural institutions face, including limited resources and insufficient media visibility. She pointed out that cultural issues are often sidelined in mainstream media, despite their significance to identity and development.

Dihwa called on journalists to take a more active role in elevating cultural discourse, stressing that well-told heritage stories can foster community appreciation and encourage investment in preservation efforts.

Upcoming Initiatives and Ongoing Programs

  • Panyatsime runs heritage education initiatives for schools.
  • Promotion of indigenous languages is a key focus.
  • Environmental conservation programs linked to traditional ecological knowledge are ongoing.
  • Cultural festivals and creative residencies celebrate Zimbabwe’s diverse traditions.

As Zimbabwe navigates modern challenges, the role of cultural institutions like Panyatsime is vital in preserving heritage and fostering community resilience.
